Well thats a very good question. You have probably heard all sorts of things about what you should do when you first start you period. You have probably read loads and loads of articles and your head is just spinning with information which you don’t know what to do with. Or maybe you haven’t heard anything about periods. Maybe you haven’t read any articles and you really just have no idea what to do. Either way, I will give you some basic information that will help you out.
The first sign that you can see when a girl first starts her period is a brownish discharge that is a little slimy. This is completely normal. Soon after the discharge blood will come. The blood might look brownish reddish or it might just look red. One thing that you could experience is stomach cramps. Some girls get stomach cramps and some don’t. You don’t have to have to get stomach cramps, some girls get them and some don’t.
When you first get your period I recommend using a pad. Thats what I did. I used pads for the first couple of times and then switched over to tampons. If your flow is very heavy at the beginning you could use tampons since it might be uncomfortable to use pads with a heavy flow.
When you are on your period you wouldn’t want to just use a panty liner. You would want to pair it with a tampon, since a pantyliner is too thin to be worn by itself during the period.
It is really up to you if you want to use pads or if you want to use tampons right away. Most girls that I know used pads at first and then started using tampons. If you want to start off by using a tampon and you are unsure of how to use them, you can refer to our post “ How to Insert a Tampon”.
First off, don’t worry or be embarrassed about wearing pads. It is totally fine to wear pads and not tampons. Granted tampons do make a lot of activities easier such as, sports, swimming and dancing. But if you feel like you aren’t ready to wear tampons yet, than that’s okay.
Most girls start off with wearing pads and when they feel ready or they must for some reason wear a tampon they then switch over to tampons. Some girls wear pads for their first year of their period. Some girls just for the first week. It all depends on what one feels is right for them.
If you feel embarrassed about wearing pads and you really do want to wear tampons then you should just try out tampons. If you don’t know how to insert a tampon ask someone who you trust that can help you or refer to our post “ How to Insert a Tampon”.
Some people wear pads because they are scared to use tampons and they just are not ready. That is totally okay, you just need to know that tampons are nothing to be scared of. You do not need to be embarrassed about it. Every one is different. Also every one’s cycles are different. For some people pads just work better and for some tampons just work better.
One thing to keep in mind is that if other girls are making fun of you for not wearing tampons and still wearing pads, then you should just not pay attention to them and don’t go into agreement with them. Your period and what you wear doing your period is a very personal thing. And no one should make fun of you for it. Just keep your head up and be strong!

You might wonder should I use reusable pads or disposable pads? You might wonder what the advantages and disadvantages are of both. Well I will give you some more info about both and then you can choose which one sounds best for your lifestyle and needs.
Reusable pads are pads that are made out of cloth that can be washed and used again. Reusable pads come in all different colors of cloth and can actually look very cute. If having cute pads is important to you then reusable pads are definitely something that you would want to check out.
Reusable pads are great if you want to be more economical. If you want to cut down on the yearly waste and the use of plastic and other synthetic materials, using reusable cloths pads is something that will help. Using reusable cloth pads will also cut your monthly expenses. Just think about the amount of money you spend on disposable pads while on your period, especially if you have a heavy flow.
Reusable pads are also great for very sensitive skin. Cloth pads don’t give you the skin orations that can occur from disposable synthetic materials. Cloth pads are also a lot more comfortable since they don’t give you that sweaty feeling that disposable pads do.
On the other hand, you might prefer disposable pads because it’s just more convenient. Also you don’t have to wash disposable pads, you can just throw them away.
Disposable pads are a lot easier to buy than cloth pads are. Cloth pads can only be purchased at special markets and from specific people. Disposable pads can be bought at almost every grocery store and gas station.
Choosing reusable or disposable pads just depends on what issues are important to you and what you are looking for when buying menstrual protection products.
